When Life Takes Control: Lessons in Surrender from Hurricane Milton
As Hurricane Milton approaches, I’ve been reminded of the immense power of nature and how little we truly control, except for ourselves. This storm has pulled me back to my center, demanding that I refocus on what truly matters. So much of what we stress about day to day turns out to be insignificant in the larger scope of life. Sometimes, it takes an undeniable force like a hurricane to strip away what we thought we needed, forcing us to surrender control and see things for what they really are.
Let’s be real: surrendering to life’s twists and turns is the ultimate surrender—scary AF. It’s like staring down a hurricane and realizing that you have zero control over what’s coming, no matter how much you want to hold on. And yet, that’s where the magic happens.
A Personal Lesson in Letting Go
Surrender is not about giving up; it’s about letting go of what no longer serves you and trusting that life will guide you to where you’re meant to be.
This storm has also reminded me of my own journey through some deep-rooted anger that had been rising to the surface. As I began to explore these bubbling emotions, I realized that the anger had a purpose—it was life’s way of showing me where I was still trying to hold on to control.
I’ve been going through some growing pains (yep, it happens to the best of us). I’ve been growing at a much faster pace than my husband, which has stirred up a lot within me. Anger kept showing up, and that ever-present inner critic started whispering: “You can’t fix your marriage. You can’t fix his childhood wounds. Maybe there’s something wrong with you.” And I believed it, at least for a while.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”
Here’s the thing—my control issues had been hiding in plain sight, masked by what I thought were good intentions. I wasn’t manipulative. I wasn’t trying to dominate. I just wanted to share what had helped me and hoped it would work miracles for him too. But that, in itself, was control. It wasn’t until recently that I understood this—wanting to fix someone else’s journey, even from a place of love, is still trying to control their path.
(And let me tell you, that shadow was well hidden. I mean, it was playing the most elusive game of hide and seek ever. But thanks to tarot and a little willingness to surrender, I was finally able to catch it peeking out from its hiding spot.)
I realized that this anger wasn’t something to suppress or push away. It was there to be seen, acknowledged, and released. By shining a light on the pain and appreciating the lessons it carried, I am aware and conscious of what is coming up now. I am working internally with myself to feel safe, even when there is chaos (nobody can create that for me). And with that release has come a much lighter heart, more peace, and a deeper understanding of surrender.
The Importance of Surrender
When we surrender to life’s flow, we allow space for transformation. Instead of clinging to what is, we make room for what could be. Letting go of control can feel terrifying—kind of like letting someone else pack for your vacation. But when we trust the process, life often surprises us in the best ways. Just like how a storm clears out the old to make way for new growth, surrendering makes room for joy and fulfillment to flourish.
The Power of Journaling
Pulling Tarot or Oracle cards gives “hidden” insight to our deepest fears + desires, picking a couple before journaling gives me more clarity…
One of the most helpful tools in my journey has been journaling, often guided by pulling an oracle or tarot card to jump-start the process. When emotions rise to the surface, writing helps me process and understand them. It creates a safe space to reflect, find clarity, and release what no longer serves me. I’ll be sharing my favorite journaling resources soon for those ready to dive deeper into their own healing.
